Did you know there are four fundamental forces of nature? For physics geeks, they would be PSHHTTTing at us layfolk right now as we look up gravity, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force and the strong nuclear force. I would be PSHHTTTing at them as I announce there is a discovery of a fifth fundamental force of nature and her name is Michelle Ryan.
My name is Michelle Ryan and I am 46 years old, a mother of 3 grown up children and a wife of 25 years to my husband. I was born in Sydney, Australia and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. I have always been a creative soul and love finding adventures. I also have a love of hiking, kayaking, bike riding and basically anything that takes me outdoors. My hiking is my number one passion and I do love to share this with the world in hopes to inspire people to get outside and breathe, walk, discover new places. It was my love of hiking that eventually helped me regain my confidence in myself as I have suffered for over 10 years from severe anxiety and panic disorder.
I now feel free and alive, I am not cured, but I am stronger. Every time I face a new trail and a new challenge in life, I just breathe and go for it. I have managed to take on some solo hikes within Australia and overseas and have my next solo in April of 2017 being a 1000km long (620 miles) bush hike. I want others to feel that strength! I have many stories to tell and slowly I am telling them. I have many journeys to share and I am sharing them the best I know how and loving every minute. My goals in the very near future are to hopefully stop my work as a cleaner and be supporting my dreams through my writing. I have a website I started in November 2015 called www.walkingtwobytwo.com. My husband came up with a FaceBook page a few years earlier so we could share with friends and family our walking journeys and it has evolved from there. I have learnt over the past year so much about how much one can learn when they really want to. I’m proud of my website and now have a you-tube channel, twitter account, Instagram and more.
How could you describe yourself in 5 words? Alive/free, happy, childish (in a fun way), adventurous, free spirited
What do you love to do? I love to hike to places I have never been before and I do it as often as I can. I also love to paint, but sadly, not as often as time runs away.
What can you do today that you could not do a year ago? Have the confidence in myself to do anything I want to. This has been growing more and more over the years and I love it!
Michelle has had some of her travel stories printed in magazines and has been asked to speak at events. I know I could definitely gleen some insight from Michelle as to how to harness the courage for public speaking.
Do you like your job? Which one? Little joke as I have many jobs. The regular job that brings in my pay, not really. I don’t dislike it, just don’t care for it much, but it pays for my adventures so I do it. My writing jobs I love though. I have only just started to do this so it isn’t a regular income…yet.
What would you regret not doing? Living my life without fear.
When was the last time you traveled somewhere new? July/ August 2016, Norway and Scotland. Hiked 645km (400 miles) through Norway then hiked 154km (96 miles) on the West Highland Way Scotland. Was one of my best journeys yet.
Have you done anything lately worth remembering? Yes, made my first ever documentary! I am so proud of myself as I never imagined I could do that.
Michelle has mentioned she has recently completed her first E-book. You need to contact her for more info about this as I will be doing the same. So excited to get this!
What does success mean to you? Success to me is that I live my life the way I want to in a free and happy way. To achieve my little goals that I set for myself the best way I can. To feel happiness and contentment within myself as well as seeing my family and friends feeling the same way. Not living a day of regret but to cherish everyday even the bad ones and be happy with that.
What are you doing to pursue your dreams right now? I am actively pushing myself through everything I need to do to get where I need to go.
What are you most scared of? Old me most probably would have answered this with I’m scared of REJECTION, now I am not, to be honest I must say, apart from death, nothing and as I’m writing this I am realizing how far I have come. Thanks for the question. I know it is strange but I haven’t asked myself that in a while and it’s a good question to ask oneself.
Rejection is such a stiffling obstacle. For Michelle to have traveled so far, both physically and spiritually, speaks volumes of the benefits of just being outside and adventuring.
What are you most proud of? Old clique, but it’s true. Being a mum and raising 3 of the most amazing humans that make my heart feel full every time I look at them.
Where would you like to live? I love where I live. It’s just perfect for me.
If you left your current life in order to pursue your dreams, what would you lose? Nothing as I have full support of all around me and I wouldn’t see it as leaving my current life, I would see it as a new story in my life to create.
If you were someone’s life coach, what would you tell them? Don’t hold back on your dreams. Even if they seem to be far-fetched or to some people silly, it’s not their dreams, they are your dreams and if you want to achieve them then walk on forward and plan your way without fear. Worst case scenario is rejection and I have learnt that it doesn’t hurt to be rejected it just means stand up and approach it differently. Everyone’s opinion is their own and it DOES NOT mean they are correct, it’s just their opinion HOWEVER listen to others and YOU judge from their words what works for you or not. Oh and breath once in a while it helps.
Fun and furious questions:
- If you could do it all over again, would you change anything? No
- How old would you be, if you didn’t know how old you are? 29
- What activity makes you lose track of time? Writing
- Best cheat indulgence? Jellybeans
- If you could only speak one word today, what would it be? LIVE
Much love and Aloha,
your mate the clueless wanderer
PS) I am so happy that Michelle’s passion is something that she wants to share with the world. I’m always eager to read her blog posts and now that I have other means to follow her, I’ll share those with you.
